Jon Sanchez, guest photographer
We often hear that Bask in the Sun is like a gentle ray of salty sunshine (!) and that our collections always bring a breath of fresh air and a sense of escape.. Thanks for the compliment! It's probably because we design them "feet in the water" in Guéthary, in this village on the Basque coast. We've long wanted to showcase this landscape, which constantly inspires us. We were lucky enough to cross paths with Jon Sanchez, a discreet and gifted photographer. He will be our ambassador throughout the year. You can see his work for Bask in the Sun on his Instagram profile @platoux. Introducing.
Who are you? Where are you from?
I'm a freelance photographer. I'm 23 and live in Biarritz on the Basque Coast. I love exploring, wandering and capturing the magic of the landscapes in this little corner of paradise around me. My hometown is surrounded by such varied landscapes: the coastline with its beaches and cliffs, the green, rounded Basque mountains from which you can see the ocean, and just a little further away the peaks of the Pyrenees. It's an exceptional playground for my passion, photography.
As for my personal background, I studied law. After a year, I realized that it wasn't for me. I changed direction completely and took an exam to become a flight attendant. I love being on the move. I'm not sedentary, so it's ideal for discovering new horizons and taking me elsewhere...
You specialize in minimalist landscape photography, in which a single object usually emerges, often grandiose like an island or a mountain. There's little human presence, and when there is, it's only a small silhouette in the immensity. Are you aware of your photographic style, or is it instinctive?
I love this pared-down style, where you only keep what's important. It's true that I tend to capture places devoid of human crowds or cumbersome details. I concentrate on light and the shapes it enhances. When I was very young, I fell in love with nature and the wide open spaces of my region. It's a huge playground with hollows, bumps and lots of water! The light is so special to the Basque country. There's no need to use filters, the landscape stands on its own.
Along with other photographers, you founded the French Folks collective. What exactly is it about?
We're a consortium of explorers! We're a group of 8 Instagrammers and photographers. We come from the four corners of France and share our work. We have a passion for travel and images. " Create, share, inspire" is our motto. It's pretty simple, but the possibilities are endless. And that's the magic of photography: sometimes you're just a few meters away from the most common viewpoint, and that makes all the difference!
You're now an ambassador for Bask in the Sun. What attracted you to this brand and its world?
It's a local brand strongly inspired by the ocean and nature, which have been my daily world since I was very young. The quality of the products and the originality of the graphics also contributed greatly to my attraction to this project.
